In the 1870s, the Articles of Confederation had felt short of the expectations of US politicians because it mainly left a weak central government.
That is why the delegates of the states met at the Constitutional Convention held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the summer of 1787. The purpose was to decide about the new form of government for the United States and to create the new Constitution.
During the convention, two main groups confronted their ideas about the new form of government for the country. On one hand, there were the Federalists led by people like Alexander Hamilton, Jhon Jay, and James Madison. They supported a strong central government for the US. On the other hand, there were the Antifederalists, led by people like Thomas Jefferson and Samuel Adams. They supported a simpler form of government in which states were sovereign and citizens had rights.
