Racing to Race

Carlo stopped to rest for a minute and tried to catch his breath. He’d been running for so long that he had pains in his side and his legs were beginning to hurt. He hunched over and tried to expand his lungs, but it was like trying to suck air out of a bicycle tire. His body was too exhausted to even allow him to take a deep breath, and he started to wheeze again.

“Great,” he thought, “let me just add asthma to my expanding list of ailments. I can’t believe that I can’t even jog two miles without completely collapsing!” He finally gave in to his aching body and laid down on the grass to recuperate. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine himself running on the school track in the 1,600-meter race. He pictured himself running steadily toward the finish line, running effortlessly like a cheetah in the jungle. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear Meiya approach.

“Hey sleepyhead, what are you doing napping on Sean’s lawn in the middle of the day?” Meiya asked playfully.

Carlo quickly sat up, breathing normally now and feeling a little embarrassed. “I am trying to get in shape to try out for track, but I can’t even run two miles,” he said dejectedly.

“Wait, how many months are you out of surgery? Didn’t you just finish rehab last week?” Meiya asked. “You can’t expect to run two miles the first day.”

It had been six months since Carlo’s surgery and he specifically remembered the doctor telling him he could start running after six months. But he thought about what Meiya had said and realized she had a good point. After his surgery, the doctor did say rehab would be crucial to his recovery but that it would take time for him to gain back full use of his leg. He thought about how a baby had to learn to walk before it could run. He remembered when his nephew was learning to crawl; within days it seemed like he was walking. Running didn’t come right away, Carlo remembered. He realized it was the same with his therapy. The maximum he had run in the past month was one mile on the treadmill, so he realized that Meiya was probably right. He would have to work at building up his endurance and set more realistic goals for himself. As he thought about what he had already accomplished, he started to smile and felt like a weight was being lifted off his shoulders. He realized that he had run almost a mile and a half before his body started to protest and if he kept working hard, he could get back to where he was before his accident.

“Since when did you get so smart, Dr. Meiya?” he teased. “Do you want to race to the next mailbox?”

“You’re on!” she challenged and took off running at full speed.

Carlo realizes that he may not be able to compete on the school track team but also discovers that, with time, he will still be able to participate in a sport he loves.

Carlo is discouraged that he has to rest after running a short distance, but Meiya reminds him that he has only just finished rehab.

Meiya knows that she is faster than Carlo, so she does her best to encourage him and also lets him win a race between them to boost his spirits.

Carlo pictures himself winning a big race on the school track team but then he realizes he may have developed asthma.

Answer:

Romeo and Juliet

There are many actions, thoughts, and themes that are used in Romeo and Juliet that are still used today. As in the opening Prologue of Romeo and Juliet, the Chorus refers to the main characters as “star-crossed lovers,” this could be an allusion that many people believe the stars and planets have control over the Earth and its happenings. This line shows many readers that Romeo and Juliet are destined to be together and destined to have their strong love destroyed because of the stars and their shape. Today, most people believe in horoscopes and astrology. These people believe that each person is separated into different personalities based on the month they are born in. These people believe their personality and what might happen to them is related to the stars and planets. However, though Shakespeare’s play talks about the possibility that some supernatural force helps shape Romeo and Juliets lives, by the end of the play it becomes very clear that their actions were based upon each other's responsibilities. According to astrologists, in order for Romeo and Juliet to act a certain way based on their responsibilities, “their” stars have to be lined up a certain way. So whether or not it was Romeo and Juliets actions that caused the end of each other, it was still caused by the stars and planets.

Though the Prologue offers the first and possibly most famous example of outer space and its workings in Romeo and Juliet, many references to the stars, planets, sun, and moon run throughout the whole play, it may seem to be that imagery finds its way to express different views for human responsibility. In Act 1, scene 4, Romeo says he fears “some consequence yet hanging in the stars” when he and his people walk up to the Capulet’s ball. In Romeo’s next mention of stars and planets, Romeo does not try to refer to astrology or their power of it. Instead, he uses the image of stars and what they look like to relate Juliet’s “out of this world” beauty. Most of the recurring astrology images in the play follow in this line, from Romeo’s love-struck comparison of Juliet to the stars to Juliet’s beautiful yet gory wish to “cut Romeo out into little stars” once he passes. Throughout the play, there are many other examples of stars, fate, destiny, that are being said which emphasize that the play escalates a ton, and as it escalates we are no longer able to place the blame of their deaths on stars or some external force.

It’s true that Romeo and Juliet have some spectacularly bad luck. Tybalt picks a fatal fight with Romeo on the latter’s wedding day, causing Capulet to move up the wedding with Paris. The crucial letter from Friar Lawrence goes missing due to an ill-timed outbreak of the plague. Romeo kills himself mere moments before Juliet wakes up. It’s also true that the lovers aren’t solely responsible for their difficult situation: Their friends, their families, and their society each played a role in creating the tragic circumstances. However, even if we allow that fate or some other divine force caused Romeo and Juliet to fall in love at first sight, thereby setting the action into motion, Shakespeare makes it clear that the characters’ own decisions push that situation to its tragic conclusion. Either Romeo or Juliet, it is suggested, could have halted the headlong rush into destruction at any of several points.

Re-read this paragraph from the speech.

(18) It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces, but let us judge not, that we be not judged. (19) The prayers of both could not be answered. (20) That of neither has been answered fully. (21) The Almighty has His own purposes. (22) "Woe unto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh." (23) If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? (24) Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. (25) Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."

The speaker uses the quotation in sentence 22 ("Woe unto the world...the offense cometh...") to

suggest that the country is being punished for allowing slavery
contrast the values of the troops for the North and the South
imply that the North has a responsibility to destroy the South
establish the idea that slavery is a necessary woe in the country's history

2.
Re-read this paragraph from the speech.

(10) One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. (11) These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. (12) All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war. (13) To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union even by war; while the Government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it. (14) Neither party expected for the war the magnitude or the duration which it has already attained. (15) Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with, or even before, the conflict itself should cease. (16) Each looked for an easier triumph, and a result less fundamental and astounding. (17) Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other.

The primary function of sentence 17 ("Both read the same Bible...") is to

contrast the religious beliefs that guide the North and the South to war
decry the role that religion had in perpetuating the institution of slavery
emphasize the religious beliefs that both the North and the South have in common
illuminate the role of religion in inspiring the reason and justification for war

3.
Re-read the first paragraph of the speech.

(1) At this second appearing to take the oath of the Presidential office there is less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first. (2) Then, a statement somewhat in detail of a course to be pursued seemed fitting and proper. (3) Now, at the expiration of four years, during which public declarations have been constantly called forth on every point and phase of the great contest which still absorbs the attention and engrosses the energies of the nation, little that is new could be presented. (4) The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends, is as well known to the public as to myself, and it is, I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all. (5) With high hope for the future, no prediction in regard to it is ventured.

The purpose of this first paragraph is to

refute the rumors circulating about the nature or causes of the war
acknowledge the reason for the brevity and content of the rest of his speech
establish the foundational thesis for the speaker's forthcoming argument
establish the speaker's confidence for the future of a unified country

Answers

After reading the paragraphs from President Lincoln's speech, we can answer in the following manner:

D. Establish the idea that slavery is a necessary woe in the country's history.C. Emphasize the religious beliefs that both the North and the South have in common.C. Establish the foundational thesis for the speaker's forthcoming argument.

Why does Lincoln quote the Bible? In question 1, we are supposed to analyze the reason why President Lincoln quotes the Bible, particularly the part about woes and punishment.According to the quote, people will (and even must) do wrong things (woes), but they will be punished for it. Then, Lincoln explains that slavery is one of those woes that people must do, and that is was originally allowed by God.The only reason why there is war now is because slavery has continued for longer than God intended. If the whites had ended it when they should have, no war (punishment) would be necessary.

What does Lincoln mean when he says both sides read the same Bible? Both the North and the South have the same beliefs. They consist of Christians who pray to the same God and read the same Bible. However, even though they have their religious beliefs in common, they still fight. Here, Lincoln does not seem to be criticizing religion at all. Nor is he saying that the two sides have different beliefs. He is emphasizing the fact that they actually believe in the same things.

What is the purpose of the first paragraph:The first paragraph in this speech, just like in any other speech, has the purpose of establishing the thesis, the idea that will guide the rest of the speech. The first paragraph is an introduction where the speaker presents the main idea that will be developed throughout the speech.

With the information above in mind, we can choose letters D, C, and C, respectively, as the best choices.
