From "The Tyranny of Things" by Elizabeth Morris

Once upon a time, when I was very tired, I chanced to go away to a little house by the sea. "It is empty," they said, "but you can easily furnish it." Empty! Yes, thank Heaven! Furnish it? Heaven forbid! Its floors were bare, its walls were bare, its tables there were only two in the house were bare. There was nothing in the closets but books; nothing in the bureau drawers but the smell of clean, fresh wood; nothing in the kitchen but an oil stove, and a few a very few dishes; nothing in the attic but rafters and sunshine, and a view of the sea. After I had been there an hour there descended upon me a great peace, a sense of freedom, of in finite leisure. In the twilight I sat before the flickering embers of the open fire, and looked out through the open door to the sea, and asked myself, "Why?" Then the answer came: I was emancipated from things. There was nothing in the house to demand care, to claim attention, to cumber my consciousness with its insistent, unchanging companionship. There was nothing but a shelter, and outside, the fields and marshes, the shore and the sea. These did not have to be taken down and put up and arranged and dusted and cared for. They were not things at all, they were powers, presences.

And so I rested. While the spell was still unbroken, I came away. For broken it would have been, I know, had I not fled first. Even in this refuge the enemy would have pursued me, found me out, encompassed me.

If we could but free ourselves once for all, how simple life might become! One of my friends, who, with six young children and only one servant, keeps a spotless house and a soul serene, told me once how she did it. "My dear, once a month I give away every single thing in the house that we do not imperatively need. It sounds wasteful, but I don’t believe it really is. Sometimes Jeremiah mourns over missing old clothes, or back numbers of the magazines, but I tell him if he doesn’t want to be mated to a gibbering maniac he will let me do as I like."

The old monks knew all this very well. One wonders sometimes how they got their power; but go up to Fiesole, and sit a while in one of those little, bare, white-walled cells, and you will begin to understand. If there were any spiritual force in one, it would have to come out there.

I have not their courage, and I win no such freedom. I allow myself to be overwhelmed by the invading host of things, making fitful resistance, but without any real steadiness of purpose. Yet never do I wholly give up the struggle, and in my heart I cherish an ideal, remotely typified by that empty little house beside the sea.

In a written argument, what role do reasons and evidence play? Group of answer choices They conflict with the reader’s beliefs. They support the author’s claim. They form the argument’s main point. The express personal opinions.

Answers

Answer:

They form the argument’s main point.

Explanation:

In a written argument reasons and evidence form the argument's main point. There has to be an explanation that is backed by actual evidence for that argument existing in the first place, otherwise the entire argument is made mute. The involved characters in the argument usually go to certain lengths to win/resolve the argument but if the entire argument is not backed by reasons and evidence then it opens up huge plot holes as the characters are making all their choices for no actual reason.

Commonlit: A present for Mrs. Robertson, How does Mrs. Robertson’s note to María Elisa develop the theme of the passage?

Answers

Answer:

Mrs. Robertson's note to Maria Elisa really helps her confidence and relieves her stress at thinking the teacher no longer likes her.

Explanation:

Maria Elisa is poor but she wants to give her favorite teacher a nice gift, just like everyone else in class. However, unlike most people from her class, she can't afford it. She feels very sad about the fact that her mom picked out a pair of stockings to give to Mrs. Robertson and she feels ashamed of having to give it to her, which is why she throws the gift in garbage. However, Mrs. Robertson leaves Maria Elisa a note thanking her for the gift because it's very thoughtful (turns out Mrs. Robertson often tears her stockings).

Mrs. Robertson's is considered as the song by Simon and Garfunkel. It is from their fourth studio album, Bookends. Their records was released as a single on April 5,1968.

Mrs. Robertson's note to Maria Elisa boosts her self-esteem and removes her anxiety over the teacher's dislike for her. Maria Elisa is impoverished, but she, like the rest of the class, wants to give her favorite teacher a lovely gift. She, however, cannot afford it, unlike the majority of her peers. Mrs. Robertson, on the other hand, writes Maria Elissa a message thanking her for the kind present (turns out Mrs. Robertson often tears her stocking).

My grandparent's house is a magical place for me and I love to visit it often. There is an amazing loft where I can sit and enjoy spying down on my brothers. I also feel glad to get into the smelly chicken coop every morning to check for fresh eggs. There is a wonderful swing in a gigantic, old maple tree and a tall, black totem pole on the front steps which mesmerizes me most. The totem pole always fascinates me and I love to stare into the blank eyes of the thunderbird at the top and wonder what he is thinking. I enjoy running my small hands over the chiseled black wood and marveling that the carver has included details such as eyes, wings and even feathers. However, it is the thunderbird's nose that intrigues me the most. His long black beak stuck out from the totem pole and has two carved nostrils at the curved end. The nostrils are curious black holes that are tempting for me. One day to have fun, I cautiously poked my finger into the thunderbird's nostril, not sure how far it would go. I suddenly felt a sting that yanked out my finger. Not only had I poked my finger into the nose of the thunderbird, but also right into the back end of a bumble bee. Whenever I see the stately totem, now on my parents' front steps, I remember what an astonishing and amazing way it was for me to learn to "keep my fingers to myself".
TONE OF PARAGRAPH WITH JUSTIFICATION?

Answers

I would describe the tone of the paragraph as sentimental. This is because of the speaker's description of the positive memories and experiences in their grandparent's house. The speaker uses words such as "magical", "amazing", "wonderful", and "remember", which shows the positive reflection of the house, which contribute to the sentimental tone.

“Scary Tales” Turn & Talk Questions Lines 13–18: What words describe the style of this essay? Which words or phrases in these lines help establish the style? How does the author’s use of the word rug contribute to her style?

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

1. The words that describe the style of this essay are: descriptive and narrative. Since the author narrates the memories he has with his grandfather and grandmother, as well as describing how his grandfather loved scary tales and how it taught him to love that kind of story too.

2. Some words and phrases that help to establish this style are: "used", "I would hear", "Grama would say". This is because the words written in the past tense reinforce the idea of narrating memories, while the description of what the grandmother would do, reform the meaning of descriptive text.

4. The use of the word "rug" shows how memories are influenced by curious and intriguing things, because it is this word that makes the author remember that particular moment.

50 POINTS What social constructs of love and gender from the Renaissance do we still have today? Your response should be a minimum of five sentences.

Answers

Answer:Throughout history, men and women have been assigned specific roles to which society prescribes standards and qualifications. There are certain tasks that have been traditionally completed only by men, and others that have been assigned to women; most of which are separated by the realm of the domestic sphere. During the period of the Renaissance, men and women were assigned very different roles within society. The value, social expectations, legal status, and rights of citizenship differed greatly between the sexes as well as among the classes. Many of these gender roles can be identified through careful readings of the literature produced throughout the Renaissance. Sometimes the roles are clearly defined, while in other instances the characters move fluidly between them. In Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Renaissance ideas of men and women can be easily identified. However, Rosalind possesses many of the traits typically associated with maleness as she manipulates Orlando and woos him as an outsider. Orlando is also forced into submission by his domineering older brother, Oliver. In As You Like It, Shakespeare assigns the traditional Renaissance gender roles to opposing sexes in the play.

Explanation:

While many social constructs present during the Renaissance are gone today, some still remain. During the Renaissance, women were many times objectified and judged on appearance. While not as bad today, this is still present in our society. Many women are judged based off appearance all the time, from celebrities to the average woman. While this is mostly looked down upon in society today, it still remains.

Contemplate the significance of Higgins’s reaction to the landscape outside his mother’s window and what it says about his character. Compare the settings of their two homes as described by the author and reflect on the subsequent character traits those settings would indicate.

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

Higgins' reaction to the landscape shows the discrepancy of his behavior with the society to which he is inserted. The landscape is delicate, beautiful, soothing and inspiring. Higgins however, presents a rude and rude behavior, showing that although he is part of that world of appearances, he behaves differently and completely contradicts both, that he completely ignores the landscape, as he completely ignores the people of his social cycle .

It also shows how Higgins had no interest in cultivating contacts and friendships, as he prefers to be in the company of his studies and whoever wants to share them. Perhaps for this reason, he shows a certain attachment to Eliza, because she is totally alien to that society, is friendly and willing to get to know him without taking appearance and possession into consideration.

write a summary for the article “The Censors”

Answers

Answer:

'The Censors' is the story of a young man named Juan who gets a job censoring letters for an authoritarian government. He's great at it - so great that he censors his own letter and gets himself executed.

Explanation:

All letters written and mailed in this society go through the Censor's Secret Command, a bureaucratic agency that inspects everything for bombs, poisonous powders, secret messages, and more. Anything and everything could be a potential signal to the Censors that the letter's sender or receiver is plotting against the government, and Juan is worried that something in his letter will implicate Mariana.

He comes up with a genius plan: he'll get a job with the Censors, work his way up the ladder, and intercept his own letter to send it through safely. He's hired easily, as there's a continuous need for new censors for reasons that we learn later in the story.

Juan quickly and easily works his way up the ranks at the Censor's Command. By the end of the first week, he's in the department that actually censors letters and is fully devoted to his work. Juan censors letter after letter, throwing away most of them that come across his desk.

One day, Juan's own letter lands on his desk. He's so focused on being the best censor possible that he mercilessly censors it and tosses it in the reject pile, which is a red flag to his superiors. Juan is executed the next day, 'another victim of his devotion to his work.'
