In "This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona," how does author Sherman Alexie use the character of Thomas to convey one of
the story's themes?

By showing that Thomas does not have a job or a family, Alexie demonstrates that people who spend their time wrapped
up in stories are likely to be unprepared for the struggles of real life.
O
The mistreatment that Thomas endures on the reservation lets Alexie suggest that storytelling iS a dangerous practice that
should be avoided when possible
By depicting Thomas as less intelligent than Victor, Alexie shows that even the best storytellers do not always understand
the full meaning of the tales they tell.
The stories that Thomas tells and his desire to be listened to allow Alexie to show that telling and listening to stories IS an
important way people shape and understand their lives.

Answers

Answer:

Connecting Thomas' memories and the feelings that comes through when he tells a story, Thomas demonstrates the meaning of all things happening, the truth behind life stories. Seeing things from the outside with such sensitivity and the way he expresses it is what makes Thomas a special character. He is a born storyteller but many times people run from him, running from his stories and running from the truth.

Thinking about that, it means the stories that Thomas tells and his desire to be listened allow Alexie to show that telling and listening to stories is an important way people shape and understand their lives.

Which rhetorical appeal uses speaker credibility to persuade an audience?
O A. Logos
O B. Pathos
O C. Kairos
O D. Ethos

Answers

Answer:D Ethos l am always here and happy to help

The rhetorical appeal which uses speaker credibility to persuade an audience is ethos. (option D)

What is ethos?

Ethos is an appeal to ethics whose efficacy depends on the credibility of the speaker. In other words, the listener will tend to trust a claim or argument when it's given by a specialist on the subject or, at least, some sort of role model.

Suppose you listen to your uncle Charles discuss vaccines at the dinner table. Uncle Charles is a man who believes in conspiracy theories and who distrusts science. Chances are that you will not be persuaded by his arguments.

On the other hand, if you hear a scientist who specializes in vaccines discussing the same topic, you will likely be convinced by his arguments. Here, there is ethos in play, that is, you see the speaker as credible.

After reading paragraphs 2-4, readers can infer that Thoreau believes people should make their own way in life rather than try to be like others.

Which detail from the text best supports this inference?

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer."

"I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."

"Shall we with pains erect a heaven of blue glass over ourselves, though when it is done we shall be sure to gaze still at the true ethereal heaven far above, as if the former were not?"

"If the condition of things which we were made for is not yet, what were any reality which we can substitute?"

The detail from the text which best supports this inference "Thoreau believes people should make their own way in life rather than try to be like others" is "if a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer."

According to the believe of Thoreau, people should grow at their own pace rather than trying to get like others. This will reduce imitation of something negative and envy.

Everyone should take a step by step way to succeed in their goals and stop trying to be like anyone because we are all created differently and for a different purpose.

Therefore, the details by which supports Thoreau's believe is "if a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer."

Write an informative essay on the Great Chicago Fire. Your essay will use research to explain what caused the fire to burn out of control and to describe the fire's effects and aftermath. 50 Points ASAP

Answers

Answer:

City officials never determined the exact cause of the blaze, but the rapid spread of the fire due to a long drought in the prior summer, strong winds from the southwest, and the rapid destruction of the water pumping system explain the extensive damage of the mainly wooden city structures.the exact cause of the fire remains a mystery. ... Rain put out the fire more than a day later, but by then it had burned an area 4 miles long and 1 mile wide.

wrote this and got 100%

Explanation:

The Chicago fire of 1871 was one of the most devastating fires in US history. Many people believe that the fire started in the barn of Partick and Catherine O’Leary on the southwest side of the city, and it burned for 36 hours leaving people's homes and businesses destroyed. Many lives were lost causing a huge mix of emotions of devastation and sadness. What was the cause of the fire to grow so big and spiral out of control as it did?

The main things for a fire to start and sustain itself are fuel, oxygen and heat. Luckily for Chicago, they had all three of these ingredients. Since Chicago was built on a swamp, and other materials were too expensive, Chicago's infrastructure including its sidewalks and streets were made from wood. Because Chicago had experienced a long drought in their summer year the wood became dry, as a result it ended up serving as fuel for the fire. The surrounding area was full of houses that were close together, this helped the fire spread rapidly jumping from house to house.

At the time of the fire Chicago had strong winds coming from the southwest. Due to the sudden rise in heat the winds increased quickly. This could be seen in the novel The Great Fire when it states, “the stronger winds, the ones people remembered the best, were probably caused by rising consecutive heat” (Murphy 1). This made things so much worse for Chicago. Those winds carried out burning debris, which would later fall on top of the dry wood located in other areas. Those areas would soon also catch on fire. Making things worse than they already where firefighters at the time did not have the proper equipment to fight these fires and to top it all off, they were sent to the WRONG location. This whole entire catastrophe was the cause of the fire spreading quickly and uncontrollably.

After multiple hours of burning a fire would eventually come to a stop since there is flammable left. That’s exactly what happened with the Chicago fire. Open areas in the north end of the city helped stop the fire because there was simply nothing left to burn in that area. Fire fighters ended up using explosives as a last-minute recourse to blow up abandoned buildings and homes in the area to help stop the spread. Finally, it started to rain which helped the firefighters put out the fire entirely.

The after math of fire had left people devastated, heartbroken, and sad. Over 100,000 people were left without a home or a job. 300 people were estimated dead, 100,000 homes and 17,000 buildings including businesses were all destroyed. The damage fee came out to be 200 million dollars which would be around 4 billion dollars in today's money.

In November of 1871, Chicagoans had rebuilt their city and elected a mayor who would enforce stricter building and fire rules. Architectes came together to start building and designing the first skyscrapers. This resulted in people moving to Chicago to help out with the building process. The population had grown to have 500,000 citizens and a decade later the city was back to normal with over a million people.

"We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win."
