Passage 1
adapted from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
by Mark Twain
Monday morning found Tom Sawyer miserable. Monday morning always found him so—because it began another week's slow suffering in school. He generally began that day with wishing he had had no intervening holiday, it made the going into captivity and fetters again so much more odious.
Tom lay thinking. Presently it occurred to him that he wished he was sick; then he could stay home from school. Here was a vague possibility. He canvassed his system. No ailment was found, and he investigated again. This time he thought he could detect colicky symptoms, and he began to encourage them with considerable hope. But they soon grew feeble, and presently died wholly away. He reflected further. Suddenly he discovered something. One of his upper front teeth was loose. This was lucky; he was about to begin to groan, as a "starter," as he called it, when it occurred to him that if he came into court with that argument, his aunt would pull it out, and that would hurt. So he thought he would hold the tooth in reserve for the present, and seek further. Nothing offered for some little time, and then he remembered hearing the doctor tell about a certain thing that laid up a patient for two or three weeks and threatened to make him lose a finger. So the boy eagerly drew his sore toe from under the sheet and held it up for inspection. But now he did not know the necessary symptoms. However, it seemed well worth while to chance it, so he fell to groaning with considerable spirit.
But Sid slept on unconscious.
Tom groaned louder, and fancied that he began to feel pain in the toe.
No result from Sid.
Tom was panting with his exertions by this time. He took a rest and then swelled himself up and fetched a succession of admirable groans.
Sid snored on.
Tom was aggravated. He said, "Sid, Sid!" and shook him. This course worked well, and Tom began to groan again. Sid yawned, stretched, then brought himself up on his elbow with a snort, and began to stare at Tom. Tom went on groaning. Sid said:
"Tom! Say, Tom!" [No response.] "Here, Tom! TOM! What is the matter, Tom?" And he shook him and looked in his face anxiously.
Passage 2
adapted from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
by Mark Twain
In this story, the narrator transports back to the time of King Arthur, bringing with him his 19th-century knowledge of science. The king is holding him captive just as a solar eclipse occurs. He uses the king's fear and lack of knowledge to plot his escape.
"Spare the sun! Take away his bonds, and set him free! and do him homage, high and low, rich and poor, for he is become the king's right hand, is clothed with power and authority, and his seat is upon the highest step of the throne! Now sweep away this creeping night, and bring the light and cheer again, that all the world may bless thee," said the king.
But I said:
"That a common man should be shamed before the world, is a dishonor to the king's right hand. If any that saw me in these old clothes should not also see me delivered from your shame. If I might ask that my own clothes be brought again—"
It grew darker and darker and blacker and blacker, while I struggled with those awkward sixth-century clothes. It got to be pitch dark, at last, and the people gathered groaned with horror to feel the cold uncanny night breezes fan through the place and see the stars come out and twinkle in the sky. At last the eclipse was total, and I was very glad of it, but everybody else was in misery; which was quite natural. I said:
"The king, by his silence, still stands to the terms." Then I lifted up my hands—stood just so a moment—then I said, with the most awful solemnity: "Let the enchantment dissolve and pass harmless away!"
There was no response, for a moment, in that deep darkness and that graveyard hush. But when the silver rim of the sun pushed itself out, a moment or two later, the crowd of people broke loose with a vast shout and came pouring down like a deluge to smother me with blessings and gratitude.

We learn about the characters in a book as the action of the story occurs. We get to know characters the same way we get to know people. Pay attention to what the characters do, how they react to events or other characters, what they say, what they think and what others say about them. All these things can help give you a picture of who the character is. Tell me about your protagonist based on what you know so far. Write complete sentences. Notice this is worth 30 points, so be detailed.
Explanation:
Learn More. Part of your job as a writer is to learn about your characters by observing how they interact with the world around them. Sometimes, writers use a literary tool called characterization to bring characters to life. Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization. Characters, when faced with a certain situation, may react externally according to how they feel about what is taking place internally. The characters' reactions then cause the next plot point or event. Why a character acts in a certain way is called a character's motivation.

Which of these phrases from the passage shows the narrator’s point of view about Stormalong?
Stormalong Story:
Stormalong Disobeys an Order
1 Have you ever heard of Old Stormalong, the greatest sailor of all time? He was so strong that he could win an arm wrestling contest with an octopus with one arm tied behind his back. He was so tall that he used the ship’s mast for a hat rack. And whenever the wind died down and becalmed the ship, Stormalong would take a seat at the stern and start whistling. With just one tune, he would puff out enough air to keep the ship sailing until the breeze picked up again. As you can imagine, ship captains loved having Stormalong aboard, even if it did require an extra supply room just to keep him fed.
2 There are a lot of good yarns about Stormalong. One about his teenage years has Stormy and his friends doing “cannonballs” from a diving raft. On Stormy’s first turn, he leaped out over the water, hugged his knees to his chest, and curled his body into a ball. His splash was HUGE! In fact, the spray created the Great Lakes. The ripples formed the currents that still circle through the oceans today.
3 When he was 18, Stormalong decided to become a sailor and set off for the nearest seaport. The captain saw him coming from two states away and signed him up before he even arrived. Though some in the crew were doubtful about his lack of experience, Stormalong promptly proved his worth.
4 Before the Panama Canal was built, ships traveling between the Atlantic and the Pacific had to sail around the tip of South America. On his very first voyage, Stormalong had lookout duty. He spotted a huge storm near the Falkland Islands. Going through the storm would mean certain disaster for the ship. However, the first mate refused to tell the captain, who was asleep in his cabin. “You can’t see the Falklands from here,” he scoffed. “Get back to your post.”
5 What could Stormalong do? Disobeying orders was a serious offense. He’d likely be severely punished. Even worse, he’d probably never get hired on a ship again. If he did obey the order, his shipmates might perish. Stormalong made his decision. He jumped overboard, picked up the vessel, hoisted it over Panama, and dropped it into the Pacific. The splash woke the captain. He was not angry at all about Stormalong taking matters into his own hands. In fact, he fired the first mate and offered Stormalong the job. (He also began promoting the idea of a canal across Panama.) Saving that ship made Stormalong an instant legend!

Reread the poem. Look at the details in each stanza and write one to two sentences explaining the central idea of the poem.
The central idea of the poem is how her mother died and took her courage with her, something her child does not have. The child states how since she is dead she took it with her to her grave which is why they said she does not need it anymore. The mother left behind a golden brooch that she wore since it would remind her child of her even when she is gone. But the child wants her courage, not her brooch.

Read the excerpt about the Sicurella family from "Island of Hope, Island of Tears."
Pietro and Rosa Sicurella lived with their nine children in Adrano, Sicily prior to coming to the United States. Pietro and Rosa's oldest son, Giuseppe, immigrated in 1903 to study art. His brother Salvatore followed in 1908 and their siblings Antonio, Maria Anna, and Angelina joined them in 1913. When Giuseppe died in 1916, the Sicurella siblings living in New York decided not to return to Sicily--the rest of the family joined them after World War I. Giuseppe D'Amico, Concetta Sicurella's husband, immigrated with his wife's family, leaving his own family behind in Sicily.
The Sicurella family typified the kinds of professions many Italian immigrants undertook once they came to America in the early 1900s. As Concetta Sicurella's daughter, Teresa (the donor of the Sicurella artifacts), recalls: "Living in Manhattan in the early 1920s had some advantages. The street may not have been paved in gold, but jobs were readily available to immigrants who had skills . . . "
