From "The Tyranny of Things" by Elizabeth Morris

Once upon a time, when I was very tired, I chanced to go away to a little house by the sea. "It is empty," they said, "but you can easily furnish it." Empty! Yes, thank Heaven! Furnish it? Heaven forbid! Its floors were bare, its walls were bare, its tables there were only two in the house were bare. There was nothing in the closets but books; nothing in the bureau drawers but the smell of clean, fresh wood; nothing in the kitchen but an oil stove, and a few a very few dishes; nothing in the attic but rafters and sunshine, and a view of the sea. After I had been there an hour there descended upon me a great peace, a sense of freedom, of in finite leisure. In the twilight I sat before the flickering embers of the open fire, and looked out through the open door to the sea, and asked myself, "Why?" Then the answer came: I was emancipated from things. There was nothing in the house to demand care, to claim attention, to cumber my consciousness with its insistent, unchanging companionship. There was nothing but a shelter, and outside, the fields and marshes, the shore and the sea. These did not have to be taken down and put up and arranged and dusted and cared for. They were not things at all, they were powers, presences.

And so I rested. While the spell was still unbroken, I came away. For broken it would have been, I know, had I not fled first. Even in this refuge the enemy would have pursued me, found me out, encompassed me.

If we could but free ourselves once for all, how simple life might become! One of my friends, who, with six young children and only one servant, keeps a spotless house and a soul serene, told me once how she did it. "My dear, once a month I give away every single thing in the house that we do not imperatively need. It sounds wasteful, but I don’t believe it really is. Sometimes Jeremiah mourns over missing old clothes, or back numbers of the magazines, but I tell him if he doesn’t want to be mated to a gibbering maniac he will let me do as I like."

The old monks knew all this very well. One wonders sometimes how they got their power; but go up to Fiesole, and sit a while in one of those little, bare, white-walled cells, and you will begin to understand. If there were any spiritual force in one, it would have to come out there.

I have not their courage, and I win no such freedom. I allow myself to be overwhelmed by the invading host of things, making fitful resistance, but without any real steadiness of purpose. Yet never do I wholly give up the struggle, and in my heart I cherish an ideal, remotely typified by that empty little house beside the sea.

Which three statements from the essay illustrate how Morris feels about things?

Complete the sentences about American life many years ago. Use the positive or negative form of used to and the words given.

People got their mail at the town store. They _________ (get) their mail at home.

People ________ (have) washing machines.

Women _______ (make) clothes for their children. They _____ (buy) them in the stores.

Answers

Answer:

They didn't use to get their mail at home.

People didn't use to have washing machines.

Women used to make clothes for their children. They didn't use to buy them in the stores.

Explanation:

We use the phrase used to + infinitive to talk about past situations that are no longer true. The negative form of used to is didn't use to. People often add -d to use (didn't used to), but many consider this incorrect, which is why you should avoid doing this.

The lives of people who lived a long time ago and our lives are completely different. In the given sentences, we should use the forms that express this.

Now, we get our mail at home. This was different in the past. This is why we should say that people didn't use to get their mail at home.We have washing machines now, but people didn't use to have them. They used to wash clothes by hand. This is why negation should be used in the second sentence as well. Now, we buy clothes at stores. However, in the past, women used to make them and didn't use to buy them. This is the positive-negative combination you should use.

Answer:

Hey Fellas!

I am Armando Gonzalez.I am a family man. I have a wife and a child. My wife and I have been working since long and we want to save a lot of money for our only child's education, marriage etc.

We have saved some money to buy a small house for our family. We soon find a perfect house on a perfect cost.

One day I decided to withdraw some money for first installment of our future house but I was very nervous about this task that whether I would be able to safely take the money home or not. Because everyday we hear about one or the other incident where robbers and thiefs rob innocent peoples hard earned money. I was in my thoughts when suddenly I came across a fat and heavy build man in the bank.

The man was staring at me mysteriously. So I decided to complete the bank formalities as soon as I can.

The man was also sitting there whole time. Sometimes he was filling form, sometimes he was roaming here and there and sometimes he was on phone. When I recieved my money I safely put it in the middle pocket of the bag.

I walked very fast to quickly reach the bus stand.

When I reached the bus stand, I looked around and saw the same fat man who was with me in the bank. He looked at me and started to talk on phone. Now I felt a sense of deep fear of some bad incident to happen. I thought about talking to my family and police and put my hand in pocket but by mistake I forgot to bring my mobile along.

By this time, the fat man was accompanied by some teenage boys.

Now I decided to run for my life.

But, I got hit by a motorbike and fell down. To my surprise, the fat man and the boys ran towards me and took me to hospital for my treatment. They even called my family and inform ed them about my accident. They carefully handed the money bag to my wife. I felt ashamed , how childishly I had behaved.

Now When I remember that incident, I feel how fear plays with our mind.

I borrowed a Friend's of mine bike and went fishing. Thus, option D is correct.

Fishing is the activity of catching wild fish for consumption, amusement, trade, or the production of fish products. Gathering, trapping, and hooking are some of the techniques employed. By extension, the term "fishing" is used to describe the capture of other aquatic creatures such as turtles, frogs, shellfish, squid, octopus, and various edible marine invertebrates.

The term "whaling" is more acceptable when referring to the taking of aquatic mammals like whales than to fishing. Fishing is a long-established, culturally diverse activity with a variety of methods. Modern fishing methods range from recreational trout stream fishing to professional deep-sea sport fishing, from commercial ships harvesting food fish on a vast scale to people capturing a few fish for a family supper.
