THE MATCH
There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.
Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.
In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.
What does the author mean by “we may say that nature strikes a match”?
A. Matches were created by nature.
B. Matches did not help people.
C. Matches required natural chemicals.
D. Nature provided fire for humans.

what season does hail occur
Answer:
Spring
Explanation:
Answer/Explanation:
spring
Hailstorms can occur during the spring, summer or fall months. The majority of these storms appear between May and September.
Hail forms when strong currents of rising air, known as updrafts, carry droplets of water high enough that they freeze. This is why it can still hail in the summertime – the air at ground level may be warm, but it can still be cold enough higher up in the sky.

Towards the end of chapter 22, Salinger includes the text of the poem by Robert Burns. What is the meaning of the poem? What meaning does Holden attach to the poem? Why is the novel titled The Catcher in the Rye? noo links pls or I will report
Answer:
Chapter 22:
Holden based this position on his misinterpretation of Robert Burns' poem "Comin' Thro' the Rye," in which he envisions a field of rye surrounded by a cliff and swarming with joyously playing children. There are no other adults there, and he must keep an eye out for and apprehend any youngster who wanders near the cliff. That is, he wishes he could save the innocent, carefree years of childhood. If Phoebe had a problem with Holden's motive, she would express it, but all she says is, "Daddy's going to kill you," implying that she is aware that Holden's plan is unworkable. Childhood is not a secure, enclosed period. It, like other ages, is susceptible to suffering, disappointment, and death. Phoebe is keener than Holden in her recognition of this truth.
Explanation:
What does the title " The Catcher in the Rye " mean?
Holden aspires to be the one who prevents youngsters from jumping from cliffs and living miserable lives.
Read the text The Milky Way:
The band that looks like milk in the night sky isn't actually milk, of course–it's a galaxy. A galaxy is a huge cluster of stars, dust, gas, and other objects bound together in space. Our Solar System, which includes the sun, Earth, and other planets, is part of the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way is about 14 billion years old. Almost 10 billion years older than our Solar System!
It took many years to discover the Milky Way. In the early 1500s, Nicolaus Copernicus was the first to show that Earth was an object orbiting the Sun. In the early 1600s, Galileo Galilei used a basic telescope to show that the Milky Way was made up of countless stars. Then, in the late 1700s, William Herschel tried to map out the shape of the Milky Way. He did not realize that large portions of the galaxy were hidden by gas and dust, so he could not identify the true shape. Edwin Hubble had access to many powerful telescopes and tools to observe more objects in space. His work provided evidence that the Milky Way was only one of many galaxies in the universe. He also identifies the spiral shape of our galaxy.
Select a detail from the text that supports the idea that Nicolaus Copernicus's discoveries needed to occur before the Milky Way could be discovered.

Read this excerpt from Mukherjee’s memoir and answer the question.
I have found my way to the United States after many transit stops. The unglimpsed phantom Faridpur and the all too real Manhattan have merged as “desh.” I am an American. I am an American writer, in the American mainstream, trying to extend it. This is a vitally important statement for me – I am not an Indian writer, not an expatriate. I am an immigrant; my investment is in the American reality, not the Indian.
It took me ten painful years, from the early seventies to the early eighties, to overthrow the smothering tyranny of nostalgia.
In the above excerpt, Mukherjee’s imagery of “overthrow the smothering tyranny of nostalgia” means what?
Sentimental attachment to her country of birth stifled her ability to express herself as an American writer.
She regrets losing her cultural identity as an Indian.
Immigrants have to learn to forget their past in order to be successful in America.

Passage
I'm glad we had a chance to conduct final interviews with the two candidates for the Muscle Power Protein Shake sales position. Before we vote, I'd like to share some observations about the first candidate, Tom. Tom seemed a bit modest during the interview, not wanting to speak up about himself. But when he did finally get going, he was overly complimentary about his own accomplishments. In addition, I should add that this is a sales position, so much time will be spent interacting with customers. As far as personal appearance, Tom is quite slender, which could be an issue, given the product he's selling. So, you could say I was underwhelmed by this candidate.
