In “They are hostile nations,” why does the author choose the word “dormant” to in line 21?

Answers

Answer:

She chose the word 'dormant to describe the inactivity in the symbolic fields. Just as the birds in the fields entered a state of inactivity, so did the nation suffer unproductivity because of the war.

Explanation:

In the poem, the author describes the condition of the warring sides between East and West Berlin. Dormancy was used to describe the fields highlighting the fact that there was inactivity in the land due to the continued fighting between the nations.

No significant progress could be made because the war sponsored by the big nations would not allow that. Birds were known to be dormant for several days, months, or years. So also, was the troubled German nation then.

Read the excerpt about the Sicurella family from "Island of Hope, Island of Tears."

Pietro and Rosa Sicurella lived with their nine children in Adrano, Sicily prior to coming to the United States. Pietro and Rosa's oldest son, Giuseppe, immigrated in 1903 to study art. His brother Salvatore followed in 1908 and their siblings Antonio, Maria Anna, and Angelina joined them in 1913. When Giuseppe died in 1916, the Sicurella siblings living in New York decided not to return to Sicily--the rest of the family joined them after World War I. Giuseppe D'Amico, Concetta Sicurella's husband, immigrated with his wife's family, leaving his own family behind in Sicily.

The Sicurella family typified the kinds of professions many Italian immigrants undertook once they came to America in the early 1900s. As Concetta Sicurella's daughter, Teresa (the donor of the Sicurella artifacts), recalls: "Living in Manhattan in the early 1920s had some advantages. The street may not have been paved in gold, but jobs were readily available to immigrants who had skills . . . "

At the end of Act II, Scene 1 of The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne confides in Peter. How do you think Anne feels after this conversation? To whom do you talk about your problems? What qualities does that person possess that makes you go to that person? Answer these questions in your journal in a response of at least 150 words, using details from the text to support your ideas as needed.

Answers

Answer:

ok, so. at the begining you need to tell how you think anne feels. does she feel happy to talk to him? nervous?

then you would say one or 2 people you could talk to about things in your personal life.

why do you talk to this/these persons what makes you feel they are trust wothy?

Explanation:

how to structure.

in anne frank i feel that when she talks to peter she feel (emotion). i think this beacuse (what does she say. does she seem nervous?) when i feel like i need to talk i go to (people you talk to, and then why you do) they make me feel like i can trust them because (what do they do. do that make you happy after? do they listen well?)

in these ways i can relate to anne frank. (summerize what you wrote.)

Answer:

Anne Frank has had all of these negative feelings bottled up in her, and she never expressed this. So finally she couldn't hold in her negative emotions, and which lead to her exploding her emotions to her mom. She is angry being a teenager in the war and blames all of this on the grownups. So when she finally explodes she takes it out on her mom and simply needs to calm down and talk. With her outburst peter becomes in awe of her "sticking it to the man." To which he agrees with her about the whole situation, with them both becoming unlikely allies. Having talked to peter she realized that all she needed to do was simply communicate with someone. At the end of the scene, they become close and both agree if they ever need to talk they can talk to each other. With this, I think Anne feels like a weight lifted off her shoulder because she finally let go and talked about her feelings. I personally like to talk to my friends whenever I'm feeling negative about a certain situation. The reason for this is because my friends are understanding but still straight forward, they are not afraid to tell me when I'm wrong. They don't beat around the bush with me and, this is something I appreciate, I always want to be real with myself.
