1. When the American Revolution began, it looked like the colonies faced insurmountable odds. How did a ragtag band of volunteers without a proper source of funding for food and equipment manage to overcome the most powerful army and navy in the world?

How did each of the following contribute to the success of the American Revolution?

George Washington’s leadership abilities

Geography

Foreign assistance

Colonists’ spirit and attitude

George Washington helped us in many ways in the revolutionary war. Despite his losses he knew how to run the military. He was a really tough and brave man. Those two characteristics helped us in the military because you have to be brave and take risks t get rewards. Lastly toughness helped us out a lot. When our solders are sick or don't feel good they don't get to call in sick. They have to tough it out and if we were not tough enough then our soldiers would have gave up.

Geography helped Americans out a lot. One of the ways it helped us is by helping us know the terrain. Going to a unknown terrain and even unknown climate can be a easy way of death. Another way is by knowing a way to supply troops and how it was possible. We need geography for this because if we didn't use geography we wouldn't know where we were traveling. We also would not know how to supply our troops.

If we did not have foreign assistance then we would not have won the war. The french were pretty much the way we got our supplies. Also we would have been enormously out numbered in troops with out there assistance. Even though some assistance such as Spain's assistance was not much help to us at all.

Positive attitudes are needed in any war but it really helped us out in the revolutionary war. They believed that they were going to win and get their land. Then the french came along and grew our spirits. This also helped us because when the french came it it greatly lowered the British peoples spirit. What they thought was going to be easy instantly turned to a hard battle.

The nineteenth century could be called the railroad era. Crews made up largely of immigrants completed the first transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, opening a nationwide transportation network that had a tremendous impact on business, agriculture, and labor. Explanation:

Beginning in the early 1870s, railroad construction in the United States increased dramatically. Prior to 1871, approximately 45,000 miles of track had been laid. Between 1871 and 1900, another 170,000 miles were added to the nation's growing railroad system. Much of the growth can be attributed to the building of the transcontinental railroads. In 1862, Congress passed the Pacific Railway Act, which authorized the construction of a transcontinental railroad. The first such railroad was completed on May 10, 1869. By 1900, four additional transcontinental railroads connected the eastern states with the Pacific Coast.

Four of the five transcontinental railroads were built with assistance from the federal government through land grants. Receiving millions of acres of public lands from Congress, the railroads were assured land on which to lay the tracks and land to sell, the proceeds of which helped companies finance the construction of their railroads. Not all railroads were built with government assistance, however. Smaller railroads had to purchase land on which to lay their tracks from private owners, some of whom objected to the railroads and refused to grant rights of way.

Laying track and living in and among the railroad construction camps was often very difficult. Railroad construction crews were not only subjected to extreme weather conditions, they had to lay tracks across and through many natural geographical features, including rivers, canyons, mountains, and desert. Like other large economic opportunity situations in the expanding nation, the railroad construction camps attracted all types of characters, almost all of whom were looking for ways to turn a quick profit, legally or illegally. Life in the camps was often very crude and rough.

By 1900, much of the nation's railroad system was in place. The railroad opened the way for the settlement of the West, provided new economic opportunities, stimulated the development of town and communities, and generally tied the country together. When the railroads were shut down during the great railroad strike of 1894, the true importance of the railroads was fully realized.

What ruling did the Supreme Court make in the case of McCullock v. Maryland? that states have more power than the federal government that the national bank was constitutional that the federal government could forcibly collect taxes that the national bank's charter could be renewed

Answers

Facts of the case

In 1816, Congress chartered The Second Bank of the United States. In 1818, the state of Maryland passed legislation to impose taxes on the bank. James W. McCulloch, the cashier of the Baltimore branch of the bank, refused to pay the tax. The state appeals court held that the Second Bank was unconstitutional because the Constitution did not provide a textual commitment for the federal government to charter a bank.

Conclusion

In a unanimous decision, the Court held that Congress had the power to incorporate the bank and that Maryland could not tax instruments of the national government employed in the execution of constitutional powers.

Pursuant to the Necessary and Proper Clause (Art. I, Section 8), Chief Justice Marshall noted that Congress possessed powers not explicitly outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Marshall redefined “necessary” to mean “appropriate and legitimate,” covering all methods for furthering objectives covered by the enumerated powers.  Marshall also held that while the states retained the power of taxation, the Constitution and the laws made in pursuance thereof are supreme and cannot be controlled by the states.

Explanation:

after the french and indian war tension between colonists and the british gov increased because
a) the british increased taxes
b) british troops refused to leave
c) colonists went ahead with plans for a union
d) the british began to ignore the colonies

Answers

The correct answer is A) The British increased taxes.

After the French and Indian War, the British government was in debt. In order to pay back this debt, the government turned to the American colonists to help pay for the cost of war. The British government felt that the colonists should help pay since the British military was protecting them from French encroachment.

However, the American colonists responded poorly to these taxes. This was due to the fact that the colonists had no say in the passing of these taxes. This is when the famous phrase "no taxation without representation" became a rallying cry of the American colonists.
