I didn't have too much further to go.

I could see the light through the trees as I was nearing the end of the forest into the clearing. I emerged and started my journey to my house that was just over a small hill. When I started my journey, I saw the figure again in my peripheral vision on my left side.

As you hone your ferocious self-editing skills, train yourself to exploit opportunities to replace a weak verb for a strong one.
