.“How Tesla’s Batteries Can Change the Solar Power Game”
by Hal Hodson
The dream of a solar-powered society has tantalized us for decades. But the costs involved in piping the sun’s energy into the electricity grid remain prohibitively high. Now, solar power could get the efficiency boost it needs, thanks to a corporate takeover.
Last week, Tesla, which makes batteries big enough to power your home and also happens to make the biggest-selling electric car. Last week, the company announced that it is buying SolarCity, one of the leading installers of solar panels in the US. Elon Musk, who co-founded both Tesla and SolarCity, could provide the breakthrough the fledgling solar industry needs.
The price of solar panels has fallen significantly in the last decade, but providing stable power from solar is more complex than just plugging in more panels. Grid operators need a way to store the sun’s energy to smooth out the supply during the night and when it’s cloudy.
The Solana solar power plant in Gila Bend, Arizona, pumps excess heat energy into huge vats of salt. These vats are good at absorbing heat. When the energy is required, piping water through the salt causes it to boil and produce steam that drives a turbine. In Texas, a giant array of batteries backs up the Notrees wind farm. This backup keeps energy flowing when the wind dies.
Both projects turn unreliable renewable resources into dependable power plants. Doing this is at a cost. “While deployment of storage is increasing, it is not widespread,” says Matt Kromer, who leads the SunDial project at the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems in Boston.
Simply plugging solar panels into a battery isn’t enough, says Aminul Huque at the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. Batteries get stressed every charging cycle and die quickly if they aren’t carefully managed.
To get round this, firms are turning to software. Kromer says SunDial taps into various data: electricity demand, weather forecasts, electricity prices, and solar panel and storage system data. The software uses all this information to make better decisions about when to charge and discharge batteries, increasing their lifespan. It can also help energy providers balance supply and demand, ironing out peaks.
Tesla and SolarCity could do the same. With batteries in cars and homes that can store solar power for when it’s needed, Tesla can smooth the supply of solar power to the grid.
A similar approach is already being tested in pilot schemes around the US. Arizona Public Service serves the Phoenix area, plugs into the Solana plant, and is in the midst of deploying solar panels and batteries to 1500 households.
Even though the panels and storage are spread across many rooftops, they are effectively roped together into a single 10-megawatt power plant that APS can control. The SunDial project is planning a pilot in Massachusetts in which 2 megawatts of solar power and storage are controlled by the local utility company.
This kind of integration is exactly what the tie-up between Tesla and SolarCity promises but on a much grander scale. There might soon be a power plant on every roof
question : Identify the central idea of the entire article and explain how it is developed throughout, using specific examples from the text. Explain your answer in one to two paragraphs

Answer:
The research is not COMPLEX
The most effective revision would be "How did Parks establish himself as a successful photographer?"
Explanation:
The initial research question is less effective because it is not complex. It has a simple one-word answer: a single year. Given that this is the issue with the inquiry, the most effective revision would be a question about Parks’s early photography career. It is related to the idea of Parks purchasing his first camera, but it has a much more complex answer that merits a research project. The question about Parks’s photography equipment is not concise, the question about who sold Parks his first camera is not complex, and the question about why pawnshops are important to photographers is not focused because it is too broad.

In what particular circumstance should a prince “pay no heed being called cruel”, and why?
Answer:
Why should a prince not worry too much about “the stigma of cruelty”? How can being too compassionate actually be worse for the country?
If a leader cannot be both feared and liked, Machiavelli recommends that they should at least be dreaded. He argues a leader should lead with fear, if not both terror and love. Also, allowing illnesses to develop that do not harm the total population. A leader must understand that love is sustained by duty, while fear is perpetuated by the constant threat of punishment. If you can't be loved, don't hate.
Why is it possible for a prince to be feared, yet not hated?
One may survive being feared but not hated. For instance, he argues," because he can endure very well being feared whilst he is not hated." (Machiavelli, 1532). This means that fear makes people more famous and well-known, while hate only makes people more shameful and infamous.
When should a prince inflict the penalty of death?
It serves to reinforce his idea that in order to keep the peace, leaders must resort to cruelty sometimes. Also, taking someone's life must be reasonable and prudent.
What should a prince always refrain from taking, and why?
He must constantly resist taking and abstain from actions like stealing and excessive taxing, which needlessly irritate the public.
In what particular circumstance should a prince “pay no heed being called cruel”, and why?
A good leader keeps everyone together and loyal while ignoring criticism.

1. How would you describe Constancia's attitude toward her grandmother? Cite evidence to support your answer.
Answer:
Answer:“You made me feel like a zero, like a nothing,” she says in Spanish, un cero,
nada. She is trembling, an angry little old woman lost in a heavy winter coat
that belongs to my mother. And I end up being sent to my room, like I was a
child, to think about my grandmother’s idea of math.
It all began with Abuela coming from the Island1
for a visit—her first
time in the United States. My mother and father paid her way here so that
she wouldn’t die without seeing snow, though if you asked me, and nobody
has, the dirty slush in this city is not worth the price of a ticket. But I guess
she deserves some kind of award for having had ten kids and survived to tell
about it. My mother is the youngest of the bunch. Right up to the time when
we’re supposed to pick up the old lady at the airport, my mother is telling me
stories about how hard times were for la familia on la isla,2
and how la abuela
worked night and day to support them after their father died of a heart attack.
I’d die of a heart attack too if I had a troop like that to support. Anyway, I
had seen her only three or four times in my entire life, whenever we would go
for somebody’s funeral. I was born here and I have lived in this building all
my life. But when Mami says, “Connie, please be nice to Abuela. She doesn’t
have too many years left. Do you promise me, Constancia?”—when she uses
my full name, I know she means business. So I say, “Sure.” Why wouldn’t I be
nice? I’m not a monster, after all.
So we go to Kennedy3
to get la abuela and she is the last to come out of the
airplane, on the arm of the cabin attendant, all wrapped up in a black shawl.
He hands her over to my parents like she was a package sent airmail. It is
January, two feet of snow on the ground, and she’s wearing a shawl over a thin
black dress. That’s just the start.
Once home, she refuses to let my mother buy her a coat because it’s a
waste of money for the two weeks she’ll be in el Polo Norte, as she calls
New Jersey, the North Pole. So since she’s only four feet eleven inches tall, she
walks around in my mother’s big black coat looking ridiculous. I try to walk
far behind them in public so that no one will think we’re together. I plan to
