Read this excerpt from Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll.

This sounded nonsense to Alice, so she said nothing, but set off at once towards the Red Queen. To her surprise, she lost sight of her in a moment, and found herself walking in at the front-door again.

A little provoked, she drew back, and after looking everywhere for the queen (whom she spied out at last, a long way off), she thought she would try the plan, this time, of walking in the opposite direction.

It succeeded beautifully. She had not been walking a minute before she found herself face to face with the Red Queen, and full in sight of the hill she had been so long aiming at.

Why does Alice need to walk in the opposite direction to get to the Red Queen?

because the Red Queen has moved to another location
because Alice is initially walking in the wrong direction
because the house has changed the location of its windows and doors
because in this land the opposite way of doing things is often the correct way

REVISING (Passage 1)

Cheryl has written an essay for her English class. Read Cheryl's rough draft then answer the questions that follow.

An Adventure of a Lifetime

(1) More and more people are starting to look in places other than their chosen career paths to find meaning and satisfaction in life, and one of the most popular

ways folks are doing this is through volunteerism. (2) One specific kind of volunteerism, though, is becoming increasingly popular with people of all ages and stages

in life—volunteer vacations. (3) This kind of vacation, one where the traveler pays her own way and volunteers her time and efforts while on the trip, is being

embraced by people all over the world. (4) The best thing about volunteer vacations is that not only does the traveler get to escape her familiar surroundings and

see new sights, but she also comes home knowing that she has done something. (5) That knowledge brings a kind of satisfaction that a regular vacation cannot

deliver.

(6) Volunteer vacations take travelers almost anywhere across the globe to work on a huge selection of causes. (7) Worried about the elephants in Sri Lanka? (8)

Book a trip to its capital, Colombo, and journey to an elephant sanctuary. (9) Concerned about families living in poverty in Costa Rica? (10) Bring your whole family

down to help build new homes and learn a little Spanish while doing so. (11) Volunteer vacations can take willing helpers to the farthest reaches and most exotic

locations—some luxurious resorts are situated in areas that are steeped in poverty, so vacationers willing to spend half their time working can visit such places in

beautiful countries such as Bali, Mexico, and Brazil. (12) There is almost no limit to where adventurers can go.

(13) Perhaps the most compelling reason to consider a volunteer vacation is the feeling of intrinsic happiness and satisfaction of doing important, helpful work. (14)

Even if a volunteer cannot stay in the location long enough to see a project to its completion, just knowing that one’s work has helped people in need, brought vital

resources to folks who needed it, or helped to save endangered plants or animals brings a kind of pride and sense of meaning that simply spending money to lie by a

pool could never deliver. (15) This alone is part of what has caused volunteer vacations to become awesomely popular across the globe.

(16) There may be no better feeling than being able to visit an exotic location, learn something new, and return home knowing that one’s efforts have helped to

change the world. (17) Because the whole goal behind a vacation is to escape one’s usual, familiar surroundings and refuel, volunteer vacations seem like a win-win

situation with a promise of some kind of success for both the volunteer and those helped by the work. (18) For these reasons, a volunteer vacation is an adventure of

a lifetime.

Qestions: 1) Which of the following would best replace done something to provide a clearer ending to sentence 4?

gotten away from home

built a house

affected positive change

taken time to relax

2) Cheryl wants to add a better transition between the second paragraph (sentences 6–12) and the third paragraph (sentences 13–15). Which of the following sentences should be added after sentence 12 to help readers effectively transition from the second paragraph to the third?

Why not consider trying one of many different and exciting types of volunteer vacations available today?

Adventurers can go anywhere in the world that they can imagine.

Volunteers of any age can travel the world on a volunteer vacation.Volunteers of any age can travel the world on a volunteer vacation.

If benefiting others isn’t reason enough to try a volunteer vacation, imagine the ways you might benefit.

3) Cheryl wants to improve her word choice in sentence 15 to match the tone that is appropriate for her audience and purpose. Which phrase best replaces become awesomely popular?

Dialogue/Incident in a story that propels the action, reveals an aspect of the character, or provokes a decision. The story is the Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe!!

Answers

i don’t understand the question but I’ll answer it as much as I know from the story.

The narrator wants to kill his old man because of his eye. He thinks his eye is a vulture and hates it. He try’s to convince the readers that he is not crazy and it perfectly sane. When he decides he wants to kill him because of it he goes into his room for 7 days a night and watches him sleep. He can’t kill him when the old man is asleep because his eyes will be closed. On the eighth night the old man hears something and him and the narrator stay still for an hour. The narrator knew that the old man was terrified and could feel it. The narrator then made his lantern a little crevice dim ray and saw the old man’s eye and then heard a heartbeat. He held the day upon the eye and then waited. After waiting he threw open the lantern and leaped into the room, dragged the old man on the floor and pulled his heavy bed over him(which basically means he killed him). The last thing he hears from the old man are the heartbeats. The narrator then dismembered his corpse(cut off head, arms, and legs) took 3 planks of wood flooring, and put his body under there. He put back the 3 planks of wood. As the bell sounded the hour, 3 police officers came to the narrator’s house. They got word from a neighbor who said they heard a shriek in the middle of the night. The narrator then lets them in, examines his house, and they also questions . The narrator said he was “absent in the country”. He thought to himself that his manner and how nicely he was satisfied the police and he was going to get away with murder. He then starts hearing a heartbeat. As it keeps going, it gets louder and louder. The narrator at a point couldn’t take it anymore then admitted his crime of killing his old man.

So technically we see that the narrator is well, crazy and mentally ill. He couldn’t take how loud the heartbeats were.
