This not only shows weakness on your part, but also insulting the other person makes the less likely to listen to your logical arguments. So if you attack a person emotionally in a discussion ,they will most likely attack you emotionally and personally, thus spiraling into a heated argument. This also shows immaturity and a lack of cool headedness on your part if you cannot discuss a matter with out brining personal issues into the debate. Another way to teach people about politics and lead them towards truth is to try and agree with them as much as possible. Making him/her feel welcome and listened to will "warm them up" to your side of the debate and make them more willing to listen and even maybe change their view on the current issue. But most importantly, show them you care and you are discussing the issue because you care about the other person.
