excerpt from "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell
The dining room to which Ivan conducted him was in many ways remarkable. There was a medieval magnificence about it; it suggested a baronial hall of feudal times with its oaken panels, its high ceiling, its vast refectory table where twoscore men could sit down to eat. About the hall were mounted heads of many animals—lions, tigers, elephants, moose, bears; larger or more perfect specimens Rainsford had never seen. At the great table the general was sitting alone.
“You’ll have a cocktail, Mr. Rainsford,” he suggested. The cocktail was surpassingly good; and, Rainsford noted, the table appointments were of the finest—the linen, the crystal, the silver, the china.
They were eating borsch, the rich, red soup with whipped cream so dear to Russian palates. Half apologetically General Zaroff said, “We do our best to preserve the amenities of civilization here. Please forgive any lapses. We are well off the beaten track, you know. Do you think the champagne has suffered from its long ocean trip?”
“Not in the least,” declared Rainsford. He was finding the general a most thoughtful and affable host, a true cosmopolite. But there was one small trait of the general’s that made Rainsford uncomfortable. Whenever he looked up he found the general studying him, appraising him narrowly.
“Perhaps,” said General Zaroff, “you were surprised that I recognized your name. You see, I read all books on hunting published in English, French, and Russian. I have but one passion in my life, Mr. Rainsford, and it is the hunt.”
“You have some wonderful heads here,” said Rainsford as he ate a particularly well-cooked filet mignon. “That Cape buffalo is the largest I ever saw.”
“Oh, that fellow. Yes, he was a monster.”
“Did he charge you?”
“Hurled me against a tree,” said the general. “Fractured my skull. But I got the brute.”
“I’ve always thought,” said Rainsford, “that the Cape buffalo is the most dangerous of all big game.”
For a moment the general did not reply; he was smiling his curious red-lipped smile. Then he said slowly: “No. You are wrong, sir. The Cape buffalo is not the most dangerous big game.” He sipped his wine. “Here in my preserve on this island,” he said in the same slow tone, “I hunt more dangerous game.”
Part A
What does the interaction between the two hunters reveal about Rainsford’s attitude toward General Zaroff?
Responses
He believes Zaroff is a gracious host.
He feels uneasy about Zaroff.
He is jealous of Zaroff’s hunting skill.
He is envious of Zaroff’s wealth.
Question 2
Part B
How does Rainsford’s attitude toward Zaroff advance the plot of this passage?
Responses
His appreciation of Zaroff’s gentility blinds him to Zaroff’s frightening plans for his future.
His feelings about Zaroff’s wealth lead him to wonder whether he came by it honestly.
His misgivings about Zaroff prove true when Zaroff proposes his next hunting challenge.
His envy of Zaroff’s hunting skills makes him overly eager to prove that his skills are better.
Answer:
The correct answer is 4. Grand.
Explanation: In this excerpt from "The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, the narrator describes General Zaroff's dining room as "remarkable", "magnificence", and "vast" - all the choice of words depicts a sense of granduer.

How does the lottery affect Tessie and Bill Hutchinson at the end of the story? Cite specific textual evidence to support your statements.
In Shirley Jackson's 1948 short tale "The Lottery," a town of 300 residents congregates in the town square on June 27 at 10 o'clock every year to play the lottery.
When their name is called, each guy picks a slip of paper for their family from the box as directed by Mr. Summers, the man who runs the lottery every year. The man who receives the slip of paper with the dot painted on it draws once more, and this time his entire family, including the kids, participates. The entire town will be stone to death if anyone snatches the dot from their family.
Before the men and women congregate, all the children congregate in the square to collect rocks. Tessie's character, Mrs. Hutchinson, arrives late to the lottery and immediately cracks a joke. When it's time to pull, she mockingly tells her husband to get going while pulling a piece of paper. Tessie does not take the lottery seriously throughout the narrative because she and everyone else are accustomed to it.
Tessie is less anxious than the neighbors next to her, but at the conclusion of the story, when her husband draws the first dot, she is griping that it is unfair and that her husband did not have enough time to draw the desired paper. Tessie receives the last dot in the end and is stoned to death. Tessie first approves of this behavior but immediately objects when it negatively impacts her.
When Tessie finally arrived at the lottery, she is not opposed to the ritual, but when she is chosen to be killed, she is quick to offer her other family members. “’There’s Don and Eva,’ Mrs. Hutchinson yelled. ‘Make them take their chance!”’. . .’It wasn’t fair,’ Tessie said.”

Public Reaction to the Novel
John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is a fascinating book. It was chosen as a Book of the Month Club selection before it was published and sold 117,000 copies in the first few weeks. The New York Times said, "it is a long time since [the reviewer] laid eyes on anything as completely disarming ...under Mr. Steinbeck's touch it is also strong, moving, and very funny."
The book did have its detractors. Some readers criticized it because it took an unflinching look at working men. Steinbeck was accused of being a communist (which he wasn't) because he illuminated the lives of migrant workers and other societal outcasts including immigrants and African Americans. As much as the right wanted him to stop telling the stories of the workers, which led to accusations of him being anti-business, the left wanted him to use his novels to demand social change. Also, people objected to the earthy language, to which Steinbeck responded, "For too long the language of books was different from the language of men. To the men I write about profanity is adornment and ornament and is never vulgar and I try to write it so."
Of Mice and Men's stage adaptation played 207 performances and received 1937's Best Play Award from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. The New York Times said, "Steinbeck has told [the story] with reticence and integrity, and the theatre has had the genius to look at it from his point of view."
However, in 1939 censors in Providence, Rhode Island banned the road company of the play as "cheap, bawdy and lusty." One board member said, "We do not think the people of Providence need this kind of lowdown stuff. The play may represent certain phases of life, but we feel these phases are not what the people of Providence want to see."
Today Of Mice and Men is a staple of school reading lists. A study by the Center for the Learning and Teaching of Literature in the United States found that it was one of the ten most frequently read books in public high schools. However, the book is also on the American Library Association's list of Most Challenged Books of the 21st Century. That includes it being challenged or banned in the US at least 28 times in the 1990s and at least 6 times since 2000.
Current complaints revolve around Steinbeck's use of language (including swearing and the N-word) and his portrayal of African Americans and the disabled. Ironically, what was seen as overly positive portrayals of those groups in the past has evolved into being seen by some as negative portrayals now. Others also disagree with the characterization of the only woman in the play, Curley's wife, who is viewed as a one-dimensional being belonging to Curley without any individuality.
Interestingly, the book's popularity and the controversy surrounding its content have made it a touchstone in popular culture. Saturday Night Live, Lost, Cold Case, Casino Royale (the novel), The Monkees TV series and several Stephen King novels are just a few of the examples of the places where references to the novel occur. Clearly the story is a part of the national consciousness in a deep and complicated way - and likely will continue to be for many years to come.
By Vickie Rozell, TheatreWorks Dramaturg
Why were some people critical of John Steinbeck's book, Of Mice and Men?
Of Mice and Men received a largely favorable response overall, but ardent Steinbeck debunker Edmund Wilson criticized the book for "Steinbeck's concern with biology," which "guided him to describe existence in animal terms" (Meyer). In his opinion, Of Mice and Men serves as a straightforward sociological illustration of Darwin's notion of the survival of the fittest.
Similar criticism of Steinbeck was published in The Book Review Digest in the early 20th century: "it is rather that each of them follows some instinct as a bull follows the chain which passes through a hole in his snout, or as a crab moves toward its food," it read.
The fact that Steinbeck did not give his viewers the conventional happy ending associated with literary underdog characters like George and Lennie displeased some critics. Steinbeck instead chooses to use Lennie's passing and George's sorrow to illustrate life's facts and the irrationality of fate.
The work has faced some criticism throughout the past 70 years, and because of its use of foul language, it has both been edited and prohibited.
