Read the excerpt from Enrique’s Journey.
Enrique greets the dawn without incident. The stars recede. The sky lightens behind the mountains to the east, and mist rises off the fields on both sides of the tracks. Men trot by on burros with tin milk containers strapped to their saddles, starting their morning deliveries.
Which narrative technique does the author include in this excerpt, and how does it support the author’s purpose?
The author uses dialogue to evoke a sense of happiness.
The author uses characterization to show bitter feelings.
The author uses structure to show the sequence of events.
The author uses setting to show a sense of accomplishment.
Answer:
The author uses setting to show a sense of accomplishment.
Explanation:
"Enrique's Journey" shows the journey of a young boy who wants to find his mother in the USA.
The excerpt above clearly depicts a "setting." It doesn't show any dialogues, bitter feelings or sequence of events. It focuses on what is happening to the surroundings as Enrique wakes up. The stars receding is one way to describe a setting during early morning. As the morning progresses, men are seen starting their daily lives by working. It shows a sense of accomplishment on Enrique's end that he has yet lived another day after going through several challenges on his journey.
Answer: D. The author uses setting to show a sense of accomplishment.

True or false? All you have to do to vote is be 18
Answer:
yes you have to be 18 years old to vote.
Explanation:
There are two elements that go to the composition of friendship, each so sovereign, that I can detect no superiority in either, no reason why either should be first named. One is Truth. A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him, I may think aloud. I am arrived at last in the presence of a man so real and equal that I may drop even those undermost garments of dissimulation, courtesy, and second thought, which men never put off, and may deal with him with the simplicity and wholeness, with which one chemical atom meets another. Sincerity is the luxury allowed, but diadems and authority, only to the highest rank, that being permitted to speak truth as having none above it to court or conform unto. Every man alone is sincere. At the entrance of a second person, hypocrisy begins. We parry and fend the approach of our fellow-man by compliments, by gossip, by amusements, by affairs. We cover up our thought from him under a hundred folds. I knew a man who, under a certain religious frenzy, cast off this drapery, and omitting all compliments and commonplace, spoke to the conscience of every person he encountered, and that with great insight and beauty.
What is a central idea of the passage?
A.
Sacrifice and support are important to preserve true friendships.
B.
Mutual admiration and loyalty form the bond of real friendships.
C.
Integrity and compliments form trust required in real friendships.
D.

Explanation:

The statement from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that is an example of irony is: "I'll learn people to bring up a boy to put on airs over his own father and let on to be better'n what HE is.”
Irony is a figure of speech that is used when the opposite of what is meant is said. It is a form of contradictory statement.
The statement above demonstrates irony because, on one hand, the father advises his son to leave school and in the same breath, he talks about learning people to teach a boy how to grow some airs over his father. We can thus see that there is a measure of contradiction in these lines.Learn more about irony here:

"Were there gipsies in the plantation at the time?"
"Yes, there are nearly always some there."

"Sometimes I have thought that it was merely the wild talk of delirium, sometimes that it may have referred to some band of people, perhaps to these very gipsies in the plantation. I do not know whether the spotted handkerchiefs which so many of them wear over their heads might have suggested the strange adjective which she used."

The Reefs
By Marcella Morris
She clutched her lab work to her side and walked briskly towards school. The snow fell in typical New York flurries, and the ground was still icy from last night’s freeze. Careful not to slip, she climbed the steps and crossed the campus toward the science building.
"What am I doing?" she murmured. Sophie’s worst habit was talking to herself in public. "I have been warned."
"You are just a high-school kid, Sophie," they warned. "What makes you think you are capable of solving this crucial environmental issue? Stop wasting your time." The professors would not give her laboratory time to complete research nor would they share their expertise with her.
But, she could not stop.
After a snorkeling trip she took with her aunt to the coral reefs, she felt that something had shifted inside her. The snorkeling guide made one fact very clear: these colonies of tiny organisms would not last. In fact, we’d be lucky if they lasted five more years. She cared about the safety of these coral reefs more than she has cared about anything for a long, long time. She had to do something for the fragile, endangered habitat with its fish, mollusks, worms, crustaceans, and many more.
She used her money to create a lab at her aunt’s house. She worked tirelessly—endlessly—sleeping only when she had to.
"It’s what Mom and Dad would have done," she thought.
Sophie's best friend, Sam, would hang out with her every day—eating pizza, fries, and whatever else he could get his hands on, keeping her company with his humor while she worked on her experiments. And now, she has a biological solution in her hands.
She hesitated at the door to the labs. Nervously, she shifted her lab report from one hand to the other.
"I know that I have an innovative approach to solving the coral reef issue and I know I can help," she said to no one.
The image of being ridiculed by these professors, delayed her entry. She stood outside the door, wanting to run back—wanting to hide—glued to the icy spot.
"Hey, Sophie!" She turned at the unexpected sound of Sam’s voice.
"I’ve been…trying to catch up with you," he panted, out of breath. "Let’s go in and…show them…what you’ve got."
Sophie tilted her head, smiled at Sam and opened the door. She walked confidently to the front, laid out her research on the podium and began her presentation. When her presentation ended, it was to the enthusiastic sound of the scientists’ applause.

Which sentence correctly uses a comma to separate coordinate adjectives? My father bought a new, wood desk for his office. A red, rusty gate blocked the opening of the trail. A cool, chocolate milkshake tastes great on a hot day. My sister drives a bright, pink minivan to work every day
Answer:
a red rusty gate that- one
Explanation:
When it comes to using a comma to separate coordinate adjectives, the sentence that does it properly is:
B. A red, rusty gate blocked the opening of the trail.
Coordinate adjectivesCoordinate adjectives have the same degree of importance in the structure and describe the same noun. They also must be separated by a comma. To know if we are dealing with coordinate adjectives, we can try inverting their order.
If the sentence still makes sense, they are coordinate. If the inversion is not possible, they are not coordinate adjectives, and a comma should not be used. Let's test and compare two of the options:
A red, rusty gate --> A rusty, red gate → Correct. Both adjectives refer to "gate" and can be inverted.A bright, pink minivan --> a pink, bright minivan → Incorrect. The adjective "bright" refers to "pink", not to "minivan".With the information above in mind, we can choose letter B as the correct option.
