In 1978, scientists studied how the fitness of marine sticklebacks would be affected if they were introduced into a freshwater environment. They collected 90 male and 90 female sticklebacks from a marine population and 10 male and 10 female sticklebacks from a freshwater population. The 200 sticklebacks were introduced into a freshwater environment that had no stickleback fish previously.

Recently a scientist decided to repeat this study, but relocated a population of sticklebacks from a freshwater environment into a marine environment. Which of the following best predicts how the frequency of the allele would change over time if a population of sticklebacks from a freshwater environment was placed into a marine environment?

Answers

The frequency of alleles in the population started low and continued to increase over time.

What is frequency of alleles?

The frequency of alleles refers to the ratio of the number of times an allele occurs to the copies of all the alleles at that particular genetic locus  in the given population.

We can see that the sticklebacks had a greater number of those introduced from marine to fresh water hence of the 200 sticklebacks, the frequency of alleles in the population started low and continued to increase over time.

Tracking Changes to Your Trees and Woods: Measuring growth

September 4, 2014RecreationKris Tiles

tweetshareemail

In previous posts, we recommended that landowners get out into their woods to keep an eye on any changes that might be taking place, whether that be changes to the health of your trees or boundary problems. We also suggested you keep track of physical changes to your trees by watching them grow and change over time. First we gave you some tools to identify the trees in your woods. This month’s post will introduce ways you can measure the growth of individual trees.

You can measure the growth of individual trees over time by measuring their diameter. Many of us learned to count the rings of a tree to determine how old they are. The other secret in the rings of our trees is how wide they are. Generally, healthy, not crowded trees will put on more growth in diameter over time; thus, the rings will be wider when they are healthy. If you are astute, you may be asking how in the heck you measure the diameter of solid wood. That is where a handy tool comes into play, called the diameter tape. With this tool, you are technically using the circumference of the tree, and the number on the tape has markings that indicate the diameter (circumference divided by Pi (3.14)). You can purchase a diameter tape (D-tape) from forestry suppliers, or you can make your own using a simple length of rope or ribbon using the method shown in this publication . Trees tend to grow irregularly at the base, so to determine a more accurate measure of diameter, foresters will measure the diameter of the tree at 4.5 feet above the ground. When you record the diameter of trees, you can follow the growth of those trees over time, and you can calculate other important measures of your woods. As a reminder, healthy trees will grow faster (and fatter) in diameter each year than trees that are crowded and unhealthy.

I think that the hardest part of measuring the growth of a forest is, keeping track of the measurements of ever plant that would be in the forest, and if you messed up a measurement while planting your forest everything will go out of order, it will also take lots of years, because the forest is mainly trees, and it approximately takes about 30 years for a tree to be fully grown, so that is what I think the hardest part of measuring the growth of forest! : you can cut some words out cause they might not be necessary hope it helps tho and sorry if its not fully correct!

The non-specific immune response is the immunity present in the child from his/her birth and is a generalized response that employs white blood cells and mast cells for conferring the pathogens.

It is innate immunity that protects from the invasion of pathogens and provides the first line of defence by forming barriers.

It includes the invasion of the white blood cells in the area of any cut or injury or the release of the histamine from the mast cells in an injured area for the inflammation pathway.

Therefore, the statement I about white cells and II about mast cells are examples of the non-specific immune response.

Agricultural sources include manure pits and cow burping from “enteric fermentation,” which results from the digestive process of cattle.

What do you mean by enteric fermentation?

Enteric fermentation is a digestive process by which carbohydrates are broken down by microorganisms into simple molecules for absorption into the bloodstream of an animal.

Enteric fermentation is a natural part of the digestive process in ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and buffalo. Microbes in the digestive tract, or rumen, decompose and ferment food, producing methane as a by-product.

Enteric fermentation occurs when anaerobic microbes, called methanogens, decompose and ferment food present in the animal's digestive tract producing compounds that the animal host then absorbs.

Should People Be Allowed to Own Exotic Animals As Pets? When most people think about pets, they likely think about cats and dogs, perhaps birds or bunnies. In recent years, more exotic animals have been brought into the pet debate, making one consider the possibility of making a monkey or lion cub a pet. People should not own exotic animals as pets because it is cruel to the animal and it can be dangerous to people. One reason people should not own exotic animals as pets is that it can be cruel to the animal. Sadly many exotic pet owners end up being unable to provide proper living environments for fully grown pets (Lewis 68-70). This is cruel because not having a suitable habitat for the pets innate needs can negatively impact its social and mental state. If an animal is unable to live as it would in its natural habitat, it might suffer emotionally or physically as a result. Though the possibility of inflicting harm on an animal should be reason enough, there are dangers associated with exotic pet ownership as well. Another reason people should not own exotic animals is that is can be dangerous. Exotic animals are unpredictable, and only specially trained and qualified individuals with the help of a specifically equipped facility are able to meet the needs of exotic animals, (Lewis 53-55). This can be dangerous because if exotic pet owners are not properly trained, they may get injured or killed. Exotic animals can cause serious injury to people whether they intend to or not. If injury occurs, the animal will pay the ultimate price even though they are being forced to live in an unnatural environment. Though many reasons exist not to own exotic animals as pets, there are still people who think it is a perfectly acceptable practice. Still, some people may argue that you are more likely to contract E. coli and die than die from being attacked by an exotic animal, (REXANO 38-41).
