In English language, to form a past perfect tense, you should use the past tense of "have" which is had in addition with the past participle of the main verb such as tidy, see, do, clean, etc.

This ultimately implies that, a past perfect tense comprises of two main parts; the past tense of have (had) and the past participle of the main verb.

Some examples of past perfect tense include the following;

1. Amy didn't invite Jack to the party because they had had (have) a fight earlier in the week. The past participle of "have" is had.

2. Daisy's dad was angry with her because she hadn't tidied (not tidy) her bedroom. The past perfect form of "not tidy" is hadn't tidied.

The sun shone brightly. Fluffy clouds floated in the sky. A soft breeze rustled the leaves. It was a perfect day to relax. Which answer option best revises the passage by using a variety of sentence structures?

A. It was a perfect day to relax. Fluffy clouds floated in the sky. The sun shone brightly. A soft breeze rustled the leaves.

B. The sun shone brightly, fluffy clouds floated in the sky, a soft breeze rustled the leaves, and it was a perfect day to relax.

C. The sun shining brightly, fluffy clouds floating in the sky, a soft breeze rustling the leaves, a perfect day to relax.

D. The sun shone brightly, and fluffy clouds floated in the sky. A soft breeze rustled the leaves. It was a perfect day to relax.

Answers

The option that revises the passage and uses a variety of sentence structures is "The sun shining brightly, fluffy clouds floating in the sky, a soft breeze..."

How to revise the sentence?

Among the options, we must try to find the one that presents variety in sentence structure. In the original passage, all sentences are independent clauses, and all of them consist of a subject and a predicate with a verb in the past form.

We can eliminate option A because it does not change the sentences at all. It simply rearranges their sequence. We can also eliminate option B because it also does not change them. It simply uses a comma to link the sentences. Option D can also be discarded because it only adds one conjunction, "and", to connect the first two sentences.

The best option seems to be letter C. It changes the verbs and, in one sentence, even eliminates the subject and the verb, forming a phrase. The clauses that were independent end up becoming dependent, so we have a variety of structures.

With the information above in mind, we can choose option C as the correct answer, "The sun shining brightly, fluffy clouds floating in the sky, a soft breeze rustling the leaves, a perfect day to relax."

Please read the short story "Sleeping" By Katharine Weber. Once you have finished, you will write your ideas down to continue the writing prompt avaliable at the end of the story.

“Sleeping”

By Katharine Weber

She would not have to change a diaper, they said. In fact, she would not have to do anything at all. Mrs. Winter said that Charles would not wake while she and Mr. Winter were out at the movies. He was a very sound sleeper, she said. No need to have a bottle for him or anything. Before the Winters left they said absolutely please not to look in on the sleeping baby because the door squeaked too loudly.

Harriet had never held a baby, except for one brief moment, when she was about six, when Mrs. Antler next door had surprisingly bestowed on her the tight little bundle that was their new baby, Andrea. Harriet had sat very still and her arms had begun to ache from the tension by the time Mrs. Antler took back her baby. Andy was now a plump seven-year-old, older than Harriet had been when she held her that day.

After two hours of reading all of the boring mail piled neatly on a desk in the bedroom and looking through a depressing wedding album filled with photographs of dressed-up people in desperate need of orthodonture (Harriet had just ended two years in braces and was very conscious of malocclusion issues) while flipping channels on their television, Harriet turned the knob on the baby's door very tentatively, but it seemed locked. She didn’t dare turn the knob with more pressure because what if she made a noise and woke him and he started to cry?

She stood outside the door and tried to hear the sound of a baby breathing but she couldn’t hear anything through the door but the sound of the occasional car that passed by on the street outside. She wondered what Charles looked like. She wasn’t even sure how old he was. Why had she agreed to baby-sit when Mr. Winter approached her at the swim club? She had never seen him before, and it was flattering that he took her for being capable, as if just being a girl her age automatically qualified her as a baby-sitter.

By the time the Winters came home, Harriet had eaten most of the M & M's in the glass bowl on their coffee table: first all the blue ones, then the red ones ,then all the green ones, and so on, leaving, in the end, only the yellow.

They gave her too much money and didn’t ask her about anything. Mrs. Winter seemed to be waiting for her to leave before checking on the baby. Mr. Winter drove her home in silence. When they reached her house he said, My wife. He hesitated, then he said, You understand, don't you? and Harriet answered Yes without looking at him or being sure what they were talking about although she did really know what he was telling her and then she got out of his car and watched him drive away.

Writing Prompt

You have just read “Sleeping” by Katharine Weber in which a young girl is asked to babysit a child that she will never see. In an essay, narrate what happens after Mr. Winter drops Harriet off at home. Be sure to use what you have learned about the setting, characters, and plot of the passage as you write your continuation.

Your writing will be scored based on the development of ideas, organization of writing, and language conventions of grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Answer:

14. True.

15. False.

16. True.

Explanation:

In Chinua Achebe's novel 'Things Fall Apart", the story revolves around the Igbo culture in Africa, specifically on the character of Okonkwo. The story deals with themes of culture, tradition, Christianity, conformity, etc.

In Chapter 3, we see that Okonkwo's father Unoka went to the Oracle to consult why his crops failed even though he made sacrifices. It was then that he was told his crops failed despite his sacrifices because he was lazy and had planted on a wasted land.

Okonkwo's prosperity was a result of his desire to be unlike his lazy father. He did not want to be deemed alike to his father and thus, went to the wealthy Nwakibie to ask for 400 yam seeds.

In Igbo culture, yam was considered to be the king of the crops. It was assumed that a man who can feed yam to his family the whole year is a man who has succeeded and is hardworking.

How does the movie (The lion king) show empathy?

Answers

Answer:

Simba is highly empathic - when Pumbaa is attacked by Nala, Simba saves him by rescuing his own life. Finally, Simba demonstrates a lot of commitment in his communication.

Explanation:

The lion king shows empathy through the characters’ emotions and how they connect to one another... empathy is being able to feel how someone else feels; not just in a sympathetic way but even second-hand embarrassment can be an example of empathy. So when they meet Simba, the “Hakuna-matata” is all about how they can sympathize with him and his situation— even though he’s a lion. He later sympathizes with his friend when she comes to get him, and this makes him realize how much his family needs him, which causes him to return. Most compassion shown in Lion King is a result of one character putting themselves in another’s shoes and empathizing with them.

Complex sentence

Explanation:

A complex sentence consists of an independent clause and a dependent clause

independent clause - she managed to sprint across the finish line

Read the rough-draft paragraph. More than likely, fellow volunteers will have many common interests and ideals. After all, volunteers usually seek opportunities to use their time and talents for issues they care about, and this is often a good starting point for many friendships. As co-volunteers, hours will be spent together learning from one another and inspiring each other while working to achieve a common goal. Teaming up with others to solve community problems and making changes for the better, not surprisingly, often leads to long-lasting bonds. Which topic sentence should be added to this body paragraph

Answers

Answer:

Hello. You did not present the answer options, but we can infer that the topic sentence that should be added is the one that shows that the volunteers of some activity have a great opportunity to make new friends.

The text presented above shows how volunteering is an enriching experience, because it allows individuals to expand their thoughts through interaction with people of different thoughts. Volunteering also allows individuals to meet people with similar thoughts and preferences, which can be very beneficial. In summary, we can say that volunteering allows individuals to make new friends. This statement will contribute greatly to the text if it is presented as a topical sentence, which is a sentence that presents the main subject discussed.

Answer: Local community programs provide opportunities for volunteers to share their expertise.
