“It’s just a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.” Manny Pacquiano had what was arguably the biggest fight of his life on May 2nd 2015 against Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiano lost.  In the end, it’s a game. Or it’s work. It’s what we do, it’s not who we are.  Who are we? Sons or daughters, fathers or mothers, friends, neighbors, colleagues. Write a story in about 150 words using the outline given below : A railway bridge gives way during heavy rains – a train approaching – a boy sees the train – stands on the track -- ignores the warning whistles – waves his shirts – prevents the accident --- rewarded for his bravery .

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

Brian walks to school about one mile from his home in rural Connecticut. He set up for school as usual by 6am hoping to arrive in an hour's time. Brian had walked for about 30 minutes when without warning, heavy rain began to fall. Within minutes, Brian was soaked to the skin. On reaching the railing intersection, he noticed that the railway bridge has given way during the heavy downpour. As he was about crossing, Brian sees the train coming. It took his mind seconds to register that this means a ghastly accident for the oncoming train. Without a second hesitation, Brian stood on the track, ignoring the warning whistles and started waving his shirts. Providence was on his side because the captain of the train sited him from a good distance and started applying the brake. Just a few metres from where he stood, the train halted and the accident was prevented. Brian was rewarded for his bravery .

There has been much debate in our community lately about the
starting time of schools. It is clear from the evidence presented that
the high school needs to have a later starting time. Records show that
70 percent of tardy high school students show up before the end of
first period. Some residents believe that this is due to early morning
doctor appointments, but only eight percent of those students had
medical excuses. They are simply sleeping in. Additionally, parents of
younger children complain that they have to wait until 8:45 to see their
kids off to elementary school.

Which of these is the author's claim?

A. There has been much debate in our community lately.

Part 1

Most people remember Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as reformers who practiced non-violent forms of protest and advocacy. Both effectively changed the popular opinion about emotional issues for their countries and brought in a wave of change that was long overdue. But the practice of non-violent protest, or civil disobedience, started long before either Gandhi or King. It began with a quiet, shy poet who is best known for writing a lot about a pond.

Henry David Thoreau lived from 1817 until 1862, mainly in the area of Concord, Massachusetts. The issue that would tear the country apart in the 1860s had already begun dividing the nation. Thoreau was only 14 when Nat Turner led the slave rebellion in Virginia and was later hanged. In his late 20s, Thoreau began speaking against slavery in public, echoing the voices of freedmen like Frederick Douglass and Lewis Hayden.

Thoreau believed that a government that supported slavery was corrupt and immoral. He was also deeply suspicious of government. For these and other reasons, Thoreau refused to pay his poll tax for a number of years. The poll tax was a legal tax owed by every person. It was basically a tax on one's body. After not paying for years, he was at last arrested. He spent only one night in jail, however, as a relative paid the tax for him. He was reportedly furious that any tax was paid on his behalf.

It was this experience that Thoreau wrote about in an essay called "Civil Disobedience." In this essay, he argued that being moral and just came before allegiance to government. He wrote “If the machine of government is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law." He also felt that voting was not enough to ensure that the right thing be done. He wrote that "even voting for the right is doing nothing for it… A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance…" He felt that one had a moral responsibility to resist unjust laws.

Read this line from the third paragraph:

For these and other reasons, Thoreau refused to pay his poll tax for a number of years.

How does this sentence prepare readers for the final line of the paragraph?

It lets readers know his refusal to pay wasn't just a passing idea.
It lets readers know Thoreau was a thoughtful man.
It tells readers his reasons for refusal were not important.
It tells readers why Thoreau was not arrested for so long.

Answers

In the sentence above, what is the purpose of the transition despite?

A. To summarize an idea
B. To show a contrast
C.To show a comparison
D. To introduce an idea

Answers

Answer:

B. To show a contrast

Explanation:

In the given passage, the purpose of the transition despite is to show a contrast.

The first sentence tells us that people who like the idea of a plant that kills its prey and eats mean love venus fly traps. The second sentence tells us that venus fly traps eat only tiny insects. We can see that the content of these sentences is pretty different. Based on the first sentence, we could think that these plants are dangerous, but then, the second one tells us that they are actually harmless (unless you're an insect). The transition despite is used to connect these two sentences and emphasize the contrast.

Answer:
2. To keep from having to repeat a proper noun over and over again

Explanation:
When we think of pronouns like ‘She’ ‘Him’ ‘Her’, they are used in sentences in place of a regular name. If the proper nouns (which is a persons name) were always used, sentences and paragraphs would run on and not make any sense. That’s why we say “Cindy has a bracelet which she loves very much” and not “Cindy has a bracelet which Cindy loves very much”. If this made sense please let me know!

Anne tells Peter, “I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.” How does her attitude affect the ending of The Diary of Anne Frank, Act II?

Answers

Answer: It makes the ending more moving because Anne is the victim of evil.

Explanation:

I had a question like that last week or the week before and we went over it in class and my teacher said that was correct.

The attitude of Anne affects the ending of The Diary of Anne Frank, Act II is that It makes the ending more moving because Anne is the victim of evil.

Who was Anne Frank?

German-born Jewish Holocaust victim Anne Frank is well-known for maintaining a journal of her experiences. For two years, Anne and her family hid from the Nazis to avoid persecution. The Diary of a Young Girl now contains her record of this period.

Jewish In 1942, when the Nazis were occupying the Netherlands, Anne Frank hid from them. She was found two years later. She passed away at the Bergen-Belsen detention camp in 1945.

Despite everything, Anne assures Peter, "I still think that people are good at heart." The Diary of Anne Frank, Act II's dénouement, is impacted by Anne's perception since it makes the conclusion more heartbreaking because Anne is the victim.

Therefore, it can be stated that the diary entry of Anne Frank was moving at the ending part.

Read this excerpt from the bachelor's story in "The Story-Teller," in which he is describing the character Bertha: "'Was she pretty?' asked the bigger of the small girls. 'Not as pretty as any of you,' said the bachelor, 'but she was horribly good.' There was a wave of reaction in favour of the story; the word horrible in connection with goodness was a novelty that commended itself. It seemed to introduce a ring of truth that was absent from the aunt’s tales of infant life." What does the phrase "horribly good" imply about Bertha's goodness?A that she is actually bad whenever she has a chance to be B that being pretty is not necessarily part of being good C that some aspect of her "goodness" is not really good D that the three children hearing the story should try to be as good as she is.

Answer:

B that being pretty is not necessarily part of being good

Explanation:

According to this excerpt from The STORY-TELLER, the narrator describes the character Bertha as being pretty, though not as pretty as either of the girls but "horribly good".

Can someone please write me a conclusion about unrealistic beauty standards? No plagiarism.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

With the rise of the media and technology in the modern age, we all can observe how unrealistic beauty standards have become the norm. Every day, people are surrounded by media portrays of famous people that send us the message that this is how we should look. What media often fails to explain to us is that celebrities have different things that help them look the way they are. Firstly, we can not all genetically be born to look the same and by popular standards. We must remember there are a lot of things in our looks we can't alter, and that is okay. Celebrities have so much more resources to spend on the way they look – to buy more expensive makeup, cosmetics, clothes that fit them, employ whole teams of people who will focus only on their look and style, etc. They can also afford quality plastic surgery more often, and they are usually required to make some of these alterations to their image to keep their status of celebrity. While we are bombarded by the pictures of perfect people in movies and advertisements, we often fail to remember there are so many factors that alter someone’s appearance.

Finally, with the rise of technology, there are many ways one can make someone look good on-screen. There are particular poses, angles, and ways to make a great photograph of someone, and there are many programs and filters that can change someone’s appearance. No one puts a picture of themselves on social media if they think they look ugly, and this goes both for celebrities and common people. Every time we open Instagram or TikTok, we see people that give us only their best. We think this is how we should look when in reality no one can look like they do on social media all the time.

This does not mean we should separate ourselves from social media or movies completely, but remember, when consuming them, we only get one aspect of someone’s look. However, there should be movement in media to change these unrealistic standards, especially the ones that are proven to be harmful (like the idealization of thinness that affects the rise of eating disorders). People working in media production and realization should think more about the effect of the images that are shared worldwide. There should be more body types in mainstream media, more people of color, people with disabilities, more natural and common people, and more talk of equality. Only with this erasure of unreachable beauty standards can we ensure that future generations will feel good in their skin and grow up to be satisfied with themselves how they are, not yearning towards the imaginary goal.

Doctors and health professionals agree, exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Many fitness experts advise people to go to a gym at least three times a week and work out on fitness machines. I think fitness machines are great for those who like them. However, most people in my experience are bored silly by fitness machines and need to force themselves to use them. The result is that the majority of people who join gyms end up quitting after a few months. Is there anything that can be done? I think that people who play games for fitness do much better. Now there are some who regard games as childish and a waste of time. But to me, and to many people like me, games are fun. The desire to improve and win in a game provides people with motivation. As a result they don’t end up quitting their exercise regime. Which kinds of games are good? Any games that are competitive. What is a Paradox?

This refers to the figure of speech that has to do with the use of a statement that looks contradictory but contains elements of truth in them.

Hence, we can see that a sentence that contains a rhetorical question is, "Does anybody want to die?". Also, a paradox that was used by the author is that people should exercise, without the use of silly machines.
